One of the funniest things patients say when they sit down in my chair is, “Don’t look at my wrinkles!” I always laugh and tell them, “Honestly… wrinkles are probably number five on my list.” They usually look at me like I’m joking, but I’m not.
After more than twenty years as an aesthetic injector and fourteen years training providers across the country, I’ve learned that beautiful, natural results almost never come from chasing individual wrinkles. Instead, I look at your entire face. Every feature works together, and if we focus on just one little line, we often miss what’s really creating the appearance of aging.
At Charmed Medispa in Newark, Delaware, that’s exactly how we approach every consultation. Whether you’re meeting with me, Loraine Savarese, RN, or Shae Ryan, Licensed Aesthetician, our goal isn’t to point out everything you dislike about yourself. We want to understand what you’re seeing, explain what’s actually causing it, and create a plan that makes sense for you—not someone on Instagram.
One of the biggest surprises for patients is when I tell them they don’t actually need the treatment they came in asking for. I’ll hear things like, “I need filler under my eyes,” or “I just need Botox.” Sometimes they’re absolutely right. But many times the treatment they think they need isn’t really addressing the root of the problem.
The very first thing I notice is whether your face still looks balanced. I’m looking at how your cheeks support your eyes, how your jawline frames your face, and whether volume has gradually shifted over time. Patients often focus on one wrinkle or one shadow, but facial aging is usually much more connected than that. It’s a little like trying to straighten a picture hanging on a wall that’s actually leaning. You can keep adjusting the picture, but until you fix the wall, it never quite looks right.
The next thing I notice is your skin. Healthy skin has a way of making everything else look better. You can have a few wrinkles and still look vibrant because your skin reflects light beautifully. On the other hand, someone with very few wrinkles may still feel like they look tired because their skin has lost brightness, texture, or firmness.
That’s why Shae Ryan, our Licensed Aesthetician, plays such an important role at Charmed Medispa. She often reminds patients that beautiful skin is the foundation for everything else, and she’s absolutely right. Treatments like Hydrafacial, gentle erbium laser resurfacing, IPL, microneedling, chemical peels, and a customized skincare routine can completely change how healthy your skin looks without making you look like you’ve had anything done.
Another thing I’m always looking for is collagen loss. Most people assume wrinkles are what make us look older, but in reality, it’s usually the gradual loss of support underneath the skin. Over time, our cheeks flatten, our jawline softens, and the lower face begins to feel heavier. Patients laugh when they tell me, “I feel like my face is melting,” but honestly, it’s one of the most accurate descriptions I hear.
This is one of the reasons I love Sculptra. Instead of simply filling a wrinkle, we’re helping your body rebuild its own collagen over time. That restored support often lifts the cheeks, softens the jawline, improves the appearance of jowls, and creates results that simply look like a healthier version of you.
Probably the most important thing I notice, though, is whether you still look like yourself. Social media has created a world where everyone is chasing the same face—higher cheekbones, fuller lips, perfectly smooth skin, and dramatic jawlines. While those looks may be trendy, they’ve never been my goal. I’ve always believed your face should still tell your story. We simply soften the chapters that time has written.
One of my favorite things to tell patients is, “I don’t want people to notice your treatment. I want them to notice you.” When someone tells you that you look rested, healthy, or asks if you’ve been on vacation, that’s when I know we’ve done our job well.
So yes, we absolutely treat wrinkles with Botox, Dysport, filler, Sculptra, laser resurfacing, and skincare. But wrinkles are rarely where I start. More often than not, they’re simply a symptom of something bigger. When we improve skin quality, restore collagen, and create better facial balance, the wrinkles often become much less important.
The best consultations usually end with a patient smiling and saying, “I never thought about it that way.” Those are my favorite days because my job isn’t to convince you to have treatment. My job is to help you understand your options and decide whether treatment is even right for you.
Sometimes that means Botox. Sometimes it’s Sculptra. Sometimes it’s laser resurfacing or skincare with Shae. And sometimes, believe it or not, my recommendation is to do absolutely nothing. I’m perfectly happy saying, “I think you look great just the way you are.”
If you’re looking for Botox, Dysport, Sculptra, dermal filler, laser resurfacing, or personalized skincare in Newark, Delaware, I hope you’ll choose a provider who looks beyond a single wrinkle. At Charmed Medispa, we believe the most beautiful results come from treating the whole person, not just one line on the face. Because in the end, the best compliment you’ll ever receive isn’t, “Who did your filler?” It’s simply, “You look amazing.”
