At Charmed Medispa in Newark, Delaware, this is a question we hear all the time: “Should I do microneedling or laser resurfacing?” And my answer is usually… what are we trying to fix? Because while both treatments can improve your skin, they work very differently. I love both of them, but I don’t believe in putting everyone into the same treatment just because something happens to be popular.
Let’s start with microneedling. I like to think of microneedling as collagen induction therapy. We create controlled micro-injuries in the skin that trigger your body’s natural healing response and stimulate new collagen and elastin. Over time, that can mean firmer, smoother, healthier-looking skin. It’s a great treatment for someone who wants to work on overall skin quality, texture, fine lines, enlarged pores, and certain types of acne scarring without much downtime.
One of the biggest advantages of microneedling is how easy the recovery can be. You’ll usually leave looking pink or red, but for many patients that settles fairly quickly. We generally allow makeup the following day, provided the skin is healing normally and you’re following your specific post-treatment instructions. That makes microneedling a great choice for someone who wants collagen stimulation but doesn’t want several days of visible downtime.
Now let’s talk about our gentle laser resurfacing, because this is where things get interesting.
I sometimes describe this treatment to patients as feeling like you’re getting the skin-renewing power of several microneedling treatments packed into one treatment. That’s a simple way of explaining the difference in intensity not a literal promise that one laser session medically equals exactly three microneedling sessions. The laser is doing something different: it delivers controlled energy into the skin to create a resurfacing and remodeling response.
And yes, you pay for that extra intensity with a little more downtime.
With our gentle laser resurfacing, expect your skin to look like you’ve gotten a pretty good sunburn for a few days. You may have redness, warmth, dryness, roughness, or mild swelling as the skin goes through its renewal process. No makeup during the initial healing period until we’ve cleared you to resume it. So if you have a wedding Saturday, please don’t come see me Thursday and decide it’s finally time to resurface your face.
But here’s why people keep coming back for it: the glow afterward can be unreal.
When that initial redness settles and the skin completes its healing process, patients often notice brighter, smoother and more even-looking skin. It’s one of those treatments where you go through a few days of thinking, “Okay, Loraine, you promised me this was worth it…” and then suddenly you’re looking in the mirror thinking, “Oh. THERE it is.”
Where I especially love laser resurfacing is when we’re dealing with pigmentation, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven texture, and certain acne scars. Because we’re resurfacing the skin while also stimulating remodeling underneath, laser can address several signs of aging and photodamage at the same time.
That’s one of the biggest differences between the two treatments for me. Microneedling is primarily about stimulating collagen and improving overall skin quality. Gentle laser resurfacing gives us collagen remodeling plus a resurfacing effect, making it especially useful when pigmentation and visible sun damage are part of the problem.
Does that mean laser is always better? Absolutely not.
If your main goal is collagen stimulation, smoother texture and gradual improvement with very little interruption to your life, I may recommend microneedling. If you’re willing to accept a few days of looking sunburned and temporarily staying out of your makeup bag because you want to more aggressively address pigmentation, wrinkles, sun damage and texture, I may recommend gentle laser resurfacing.
And sometimes the answer is both but not necessarily at the same time.
Your skin changes. Your goals change. The treatment I recommend for you at 35 may not be what I recommend at 50. Even the time of year matters because resurfaced skin requires careful sun protection, and certain skin types and pigmentation conditions require additional consideration before laser treatment.
This is also why I don’t believe in choosing treatments because TikTok told you which one is “better.” There isn’t one universally better treatment. There’s a better treatment for your skin, your concerns, your lifestyle and the amount of downtime you’re willing to have.
At Charmed Medispa in Newark, Delaware, our approach has always been to look at the person sitting in front of us and decide what actually makes sense. Sometimes that’s microneedling. Sometimes it’s gentle laser resurfacing. Sometimes I may tell you that you don’t need either one yet.
The goal isn’t to do the most treatments.
It’s to do the right treatment at the right time.
So if you’re comparing laser resurfacing vs. microneedling in Newark, Delaware, come in and let us look at your skin. If collagen stimulation with minimal downtime is the priority, microneedling may win. If pigmentation, sun damage, wrinkles, acne scarring and more significant resurfacing are what we’re trying to tackle, gentle laser resurfacing may be the better conversation.
Either way, we’re after the same thing: healthier-looking skin, natural improvement, and that moment when you catch yourself in the mirror and think…
Okay, THAT was worth it.
