Microneedling is one of the most talked about treatments in aesthetics right now, and for good reason. When done correctly, it can improve skin texture, soften fine lines, reduce acne scars, and boost overall skin health. But here’s the truth many people don’t talk about. Sometimes microneedling doesn’t deliver the results patients expect.
At Charmed Medispa in Newark, Delaware, we often see patients who say they’ve tried microneedling before and didn’t notice much of a difference. The treatment itself isn’t the problem. It usually comes down to how it was done, how often it was done, and what was done before and after.
One of the biggest reasons microneedling doesn’t work is depth and technique. Not all treatments are created equal. If the needles are too shallow, you’re not stimulating enough collagen to create real change. If they’re too aggressive, especially in certain areas or skin types, you can cause irritation without meaningful improvement.
“Microneedling is very technique dependent,” says Shae Ryan, aesthetician at Charmed Medispa. “It’s not just about running a device over the skin. Depth, pressure, and how you customize each area makes a huge difference in the outcome.”
Another common issue is not doing enough treatments. Microneedling is not a one and done procedure. Collagen remodeling takes time, and most patients need a series of treatments to see noticeable results.
“We always explain that microneedling is a process,” says Shae Ryan. “You’re building collagen gradually. When patients only do one session and stop, they’re not giving their skin enough time to respond.” Microneedling is also age dependant and patients who are older need more treatments than younger patients. It’s all about a customized approach to microneedling and educating the patient.
Post care is another major factor that can impact results. Using the wrong products after treatment or not protecting the skin properly can slow healing and reduce effectiveness. In some cases, it can even lead to complications like irritation or pigmentation changes.
This is especially important for patients with darker skin tones. In Newark, Delaware, we treat a diverse range of skin types, and proper aftercare is critical.
“With deeper skin tones, we have to be very intentional,” says Shae Ryan. “Too much inflammation or incorrect aftercare can lead to pigmentation issues. That’s why we focus so much on gentle healing and sun protection after treatment.”
Another reason patients don’t see results is unrealistic expectations. Microneedling improves skin quality, but it doesn’t replace more advanced treatments for deeper concerns. Severe acne scarring, significant skin laxity, or deeper wrinkles may require a combination approach.
“Microneedling is amazing for texture, pores, and early signs of aging,” says Shae Ryan. “But if someone needs more correction, we’ll guide them toward treatments that will actually get them the results they want. One of our most popular treatments as an alternative is a gentle laser resurfacing. If someone is looking for faster, more compelling results, a laser treatment could be a better option with higher satisfaction.”
Consistency also matters. Skin health is not something you fix in one visit. Maintaining results with a proper skincare routine and periodic treatments is key to long-term improvement.
If you’ve tried microneedling before and didn’t see results, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. It means the approach may need to be adjusted.
